Laziness Stole My Week! March 5, 2009

A friend invited me to go walking with her today. That really interferes with my plan to dominate the world with passivity and laziness.  You know, to properly master being lazy is much more work than it should be. I’m just sayin’

I did skip working out again today. I blame my toe.  I’ve been (what I call) medicating it since last night. So, I think I’ll be okay to walk.  You know, other that it completely and totally contradicting my lazy plan.

Speaking of plans… I did have big plans that included massive cleaning and a daily workout routine, but that kind of fell by the way side.  I ended up eating poorly and watching too much (on-line) t.v.

I mean, seriously, LOST, HK, Heroes, Chuck, The Terminator: TSCC, Fringe, Bones… Can you blame me?
And thanks to a friend, I have added another show to the list.  See, she told me about a show on TNT.  I hadn’t actually seen the show myself.  So, it only made sense that I should go to the site and check it out, right?  Well, while I was there, I discovered some episodes of  The Closer I hadn’t seen. Well, you can bet your whole bag of Smarties that I watched what was available there.  And while I was on-site, I checked out one other show called Leverage.  Hooked.  That’s all I can say.  Hooked.  It cracks me up much like Bones does.  I can see the old me so much in one of those characters.  Don’t worry about which one.  And then, a couple of the guys in the show… How comical.  I know both those types.  I love the characters because it’s just… they’re funny.

Hey, I only claim to have a sense of humor. I don’t recall saying it’s a GOOD one, just that it exists.  K? K.

Anyhow, the computer and my toe and the ice cream have completely stolen all my time this week.  S-L-A-C-K-E-R!!!

On the bright side, I’ll have plenty to do this weekend. Yes?

I think those that work in tech support – the ones that are truly helpful, knowledgeable and understandable – are grossly UNDER paid!!!

Why yes, I did have several conversation with Mother about her computer today.  Why do you ask?

I love getting comments. I really do.  It’s almost as exciting as watching the little stat counter roller coaster.

(Okay, stop talking about how sad that is, would ya?  This is actually going somewhere.)

Recently someone left a comment on one of my spider posts.  So, I wandered over to check out their blog.  (I do that when there is a link. Do you?) The first post I read was a great reminder.  As a matter of a fact, I am posting it here so you can check it out.

The internet, the new babysitter?

I read a lot of good post on good topics by good bloggers.  Rarely though do I link to a post just for the post itself.  I might link because I’m responding to it, inspired by it, stealing it (like MeMes not like plagiarism) or something of the sort.  However, this I am linking because you need to read it.  As a parent, you need to read it.  As a teen who thinks it’s okay to just friend anyone, maybe you should read it too and understand “what the big deal is” (The big deal is people like “Bob”).

Thank you, Narcissus, for being on the ball and shoving our parental wrongs in our face for the sake of our children.

Now if you’ll all excuse me, I need to go look at my children’s computer history.

You hear nothing from me for days, then you get two post in the same night!

While I could go on a rant, making this post more of book than an entry, I’ll keep it short and just say the following.

I am tired of my posts being stolen.  I am tired of my posts being taken and credit given to another.  Though I find it ironic that some of the sites that steal my posts have actually stolen posts that stating I dislike either their product (coffee) or their practices (spam), I do not find enough humor in that to dismiss them taking my life as their own.

I looked around tonight to see what was out there.  Meaning, I decided to see what options are available to me… such as blocking IP addresses or making them give me their computer to use for good instead of evil.  In searching through some faq, I came across this:
http://stolen.wordpress.com/

I highly suggest that you take a look there.  Especially if your “p i n g  b a c k” says stuff like “NotTheRealAuthor’sName wrote this today….” followed by your post.

Good luck and happy blogging.

Oh, by the way and just in case…
This post was written by L of WayTMI.WordPress.com.  If you are reading it anywhere else, then you might be reading a thief’s blog.  Just sayin’

Yup, that’s right.  Another person posting another blog about another storm.

It seems that myself, along with others, are finding ourselves in the path of a hurricane even though the state we live in is not, I repeat, NOT near a gulf or ocean.  It seems the second hurricane of the season is heading straight for my inland butt.  The last one was just some rain.  This one, so the rumors go, is going to be A LOT more.  Living only about 5 blocks from a river – which is fed by a dam not far away – I should probably be concerned… again.  I am tired of being concerned.

I wonder if this is how it is for some of those waiting on Jesus.  “But I am tired of waiting…”

Ok, fine fine.  I will be ready.
But how does one prepare?  … here?  …. in my situation?
How does one get ready for a storm?  I mean really, what more is there to do?

I’m as ready as can be, I think.

**** **** **** ****

Now for a completely unrelated story…

We went to the fair last night.  It was not bad.  Other than my feet, legs, and back killing me and the few times the children were, how shall I say, were impatient, I had a rather nice time.

I had the opportunity to take some rather interesting photos, too.  I’ll try to get some of those up soon.

**** **** **** ***

I help HER (my mother) with internet again today.  Do you think that is why I have a slight headache?
She is trying to get with it.  I’m so glad and so distressed all at the same time.   It is almost watching a child take a first step.  You are excited, but you aren’t looking forward to the messes you’ll have to clean up.

**** **** **** ***

Speaking of getting with it…

Which is best and why?
Twitter or Plurk

I guess now I’m the one who is falling behind in the times.

Wonderful Box:

About one week ago I alluded to a wonderful box (among other things) in a post I wrote.  Now, lucky lucky you gets to read all about it.
I had ordered some clothes for Daughter on-line.  They fit, but if she grows or eats a large meal they will no longer fit.  So, I got a hold of friend to ask what size her girls wear.  Turns out, the clothes are too big for her girls, but…….

Ah, the but.  I love this but.

BUT, she has a box sitting there that I might be interested in.   It is full of clothes just my girl’s size.

OH YEAH BABY!!!
So, we were blessed beyond measure with a box of clothes that will both give Daughter some new school clothes and winter clothes.

There was one big fault with this box though.  What is that, you ask?  What could I possibly complain about?  Well, this:

Don’t ya just LOVE them?!?!?!?!  The problem is, they are Daughter’s size, not mine!  How rude!  Right?

******** **** ******** ****

Actually that box also arrived right around Daughter’s birthday.  For her, it was like getting a present in the mail!  Yay!
Her birthday actually fell on a weekday, so we celebrated on Saturday.  Yes, Movie Saturday.  She invited a friend to go to the movies with her instead of having a party.  Worked for me, sorta.  See, I did not enjoy the movie all that much and there were a few “issues.”   But all in all, I guess, it was good.  *clears throat*  Okay, well it wasn’t too bad.

******** **** ******** ****

Have I mentioned that Mother is not, I repeat NOT computer knowledgeable.  I mean, seriously.  Ok, let me just give you a hint as to how bad it is…
She called when she got her new computer (yes, she actually has had a computer before this one).  She said “It’s all hooked up but won’t come on. The screen is black.”
I asked the standard questions.  “Is it plugged into the wall and the computer?  Is it turned on?”
She could not find the power button for the monitor.   …… “You mean the thing that looks like a clock?”
“Yeah……”

Ok, well this same woman now has internet.  I spend the better part of 3 days trying to get her, her new roommate, their two computers and their cable tv all set up.  *sigh*  And I ain’t done yet.

She calls with questions.  Which, I normally wouldn’t mind, but the calls in the past have gone like this:
“There was a box. What does it mean?”
“Read it to me.”
“I can’t. I closed it.  Why was it there?”
“AAAAGHAFHASLPDOFRA!”

OR

“Why won’t my music play?”
“Open your media player.”
“What’s that?”

Okay, so asking what a media player is when you don’t know is fine. However, you must keep in mind, that I had SHOWN her before where it is and where the quick link to open it was…

This is the source of endless frustration followed (days later) by laughter.   She takes my frustration well.  I have, standing in front of her, made “static sounds” (like on a cell phone) and said “You’re breaking up.”

******** **** ******** ****

So far school seems to be going well. You know, outside of the big drama.  Don’t worry, we actually weren’t directly involved this time.  That is to say, we weren’t the main characters.

******** **** ******** ****

Just got off the phone, I kid you not, to answer more questions.  Yes, SHE is on the INTERNET.   By the way, a forward slash is under the question mark… next to the shift key.

******** **** ******** ****

And that last phone call leads me to this week’s Sunday Song.  I picked something rather mellow and from way way back.  So, kick back, relax, and enjoy this song from another time.

As some of you may know, I use a blog-reader. (I’ll get part two of that post up some day, I just know it!) I have been using this blog reader for well over a year. Maybe even 2 years.

It is time to update it. It is disorganized (hush, Misty) and full of blogs that I do not read that often. There are even some blogs on there that seem to be inactive.

The problem is this: I don’t want to let go.
I am *inhales deeply* a URL-pack-rat. I do read all of them sometimes, some of them all the time. The inactive links might one day become active again. It has happened!

I need to cut the strings. I need to reorganize. I need to create folders, rearrange, and even use the horror-of-horrors!-delete option. I don’t want to. I mean, I can hear my justifications already “But I do read that one some times.” *sigh*

Maybe I could just make a folder titled “Occasionally Read”?

****************

I was reading over at Nandango’s blog today. She has a whole page dedicated to a show that I have never watched. I am not sure if I should read it or not. Will I be lost, not knowing what she is talking about -OR- will I become interested and addicted like I have to HK, start a category here for it and watch it on-line every week? Then Misty will read my new post and become addicted like she did with RS. She’ll yell at me and get even by getting me addicted to something else…. See? It could be dangerous.
Then again, if I don’t read and watch PB, then I might get banned from Nandango’s blog!
(Not really, but it just wouldn’t end the same if there wasn’t a dramatic consequence… then again, maybe she would ban me…)

****************

Sweetie occasionally posts photo-essays. I still need to get my family together to do our review of this photo-essay. I like to guess who will like what, then ask them (my family) and see what I got right. Is that wrong?

****************

I need to clean my ‘fridge. It is gross.
Yeah, you needed to know that….

****************

I have big plans to play on the computer later tonight. We (Hubby and I) were suppose to go some place this evening. I called my friend and let her know we would not be there since Hubby had to cancel. Then I made my big computer plans. I hope the rain realizes it must go around us and not interfere with my connection.

****************

I need to pay the water bill too. I can do that tomorrow, I guess.

****************

I have that Twitter account now, but only 1 person who I stalk follow. Where are all the people who I thought were Twits? Or is it Twitters? Maybe Twitterers?

****************

Okay. No more stalling.
I must go…
…clean my reader.
…clean my refrigerator.
…make my menu for the week.
…and a bunch of other stuff I’ll end up putting off.

I finally did it.
I don’t know why I did, but I did.
I may be the second to the last in the world to do it, but I’ve done it.
Now, I wonder what the point of it is.

You follow people; people follow you.
Is it a stalker’s paradise?
Is it satisfaction for the curious?
Is it a way to reach out and not feel so lonely in this, the electronic age?

Twitter.
I’m still trying to find my way around.

Ha! I bet you thought I forgot about this, didn’t you?
Well, I didn’t. Nope.
As a matter of a fact, I’ve had one sitting in drafts for quite some time now. This, however, is not it.
This is a very new one typed just today for your reading and linking pleasure. And yes, once you click the link and look around, you’ll be pleased.

What am I going on about you ask?

Well, let me just tell you.
I am going on about the blog
“Chickens in the Road” by author Suzanne McMinn.

Although I may not remember how I originally arrived there, I have remembered to go back. As a matter of fact, I bloglined it in my “trial folder” and soon will move it out of there into the keepers section.

I do not comment on her blog often (maybe even never) and I have not been reading long. The visits I have made though have been very inspiring to me. The writer shares plenty of photographs that are sure to make you smile. She shares about life on her farm, has several side links that I have yet to explore, and recently had her readers help to name her baby goats.

Being a city girl on the inside, I have learned much from the short time I have been reading her entries. She inspires me and gives me hope of surviving if the day ever comes where Hubby and I have land and animals. As a matter of fact, I showed Hubby her tractor post with a “See, this is the kind of stuff that would happen if we had land…” comment.

Now, don’t misunderstand. I am not saying the author is a city girl. I am saying her post are funny, informative, well written and sometimes just down right cute. She shares in a way that leaves you feeling like you’ve just spent Sunday after church visiting her at home, sharing lunch, and exploring her farm. And that’s just on the first visit to Chickens in the Road.

Blog Readers pt.1 July 12, 2008

I confess.
I use a blog reader.
I often see posts without being seen on stat counters.
Sometimes I see posts that are deleted but caught in my reader before delete was hit.

I am not trying to be sneaky. Nope, I’m not.
I am just lazy.

See, back in the day I use to hit blogs 3 or 4 times a day looking to see if a new post was up. Yeah, I was home a lot and looking to escape. Plus I am very nosy caring. The people behind some of the blogs and I actually became friends. We’d chat on various instant messengers, email, or visit on other sites.

Some of those friendships have faded away. Some are kind of on again and off again. A couple of people I still email, visit their blogs, and/or talk to in other ways. I still think about the ones that I became close to but don’t get to talk to anymore.

I think, for me, it seems like people are friends because there is less of the “get to know you” stage when your first introduction is seeing into their private lives.

See, there are many types of bloggers. Some stick to topics (tech blogs, car blogs, recipe blogs, etc), some mix topics with life (farm blogs, frugal with life, applying Scripture in every day life, telling about your day and then the recipe you used for dinner, etc), some are therapeutic (rants and raves only, processing childhood memories, talking about therapy, dreams, journaling living life with _______ disorder, etc), some are like magazines with many authors (living life as a large woman, how to be frugal, tech, etc.) and some are just plain ol’ personal (mixing a bit of it all, raw and candid). I visit a bit of them all. The blogs that are most candid, it seems more like they are friends. Some people may be uncomfortable reading about a person’s life. To me though, it is like going out to lunch and lending an ear to a friend.

I think I got off track.
Where was I?
Oh yeah…

Blog readers…
Okay, so I use to hit certain blogs several times a day because they often posted at least once a day (sometimes more). Eventually, I decided to give “subscribing” a try. However, not one to be consistent with email, I went to a feed thingy.

I soon learned that the feed thingy would be one of my most favorite tools.

I no longer had to check all those individual links. I only had to open one little site and BAM! there were all the posts I needed to get caught up on. Not only that, I could add this little thing to my browser to make adding blogs to my feeder-reader easier!
Sometimes it is not the most current – meaning it does not always instantly grab a new post. But it will be there eventually.
Not everyone has their blog set up for feeds. Some sites you just have to check yourself.
Sometimes you read a post, go there to comment, and learn the post has been deleted.
But over all, it is a link-click-saver. One click and all your “friends” are there.

Which one do I use? Where is it? How do you set it up? What is the little browser adder thingy?

Well…. You’ll just have to wait for part 2 to find out.
